Lessons
December 2023- ELA: Diversity & Differences
Diversity, Finding Differences, & Breaking Down Words to Find Definitions (Formal Observation)
Students were taught specific vocabulary words to better understand how diversity is used in language arts. The lesson included a focus on diversity, allowing students to find differences between two or more examples, and provide an example of their own. The lesson also focused on breaking down words to determine the meaning. We used Nearpod to run through the lesson, check for understanding, and utilize a game-based assessment within the application, called "Time to Climb".
May 2023- ELA: Figurative Language
Similes & Metaphors (Formal Observation)
During a poetry unit, students were exposed to various types of figurative language. After observing some confusion on specific topics, I decided to focus this lesson on similes & metaphors to ensure that my students truly understood the concepts. Using Nearpod, the students reviewed, practiced, and tested their knowledge in a game-based assessment called Blooket.
March 2022 - ELA Reading
Poetry
In this lesson, students were exposed to a type of poetry that shows the point of view of two different characters. We talked about the author and his background, as well as Godzilla, although most did not know about the monster! The students analyzed the feelings of each character using "compare & contrast" and "inferencing". Later in the lesson, the students wrote their own poems showing two characters reacting to a similar situation.
November 2021 - ELA Writing
Showing, Not Telling
Using CKLA Amplify, I curated a lesson to introduce the concept, "Showing, Not Telling." In this lesson, students learn how to SHOW details in their reading, rather than just TELLING the reader how a character feels. These details include facial expressions, action & body language, and dialogue & tone. The students created Pixton comics and Emoji stories to practice this skill.
2022 - SEL Lessons
Wellness Wednesday:
Healthy Relationships & Problem Solving
Our school implemented something called "Wellness Wednesdays" where students stay with their Homeroom teacher all day to work on SEL and team-building activities. These special days occur on Wednesday Half Days and have been extremely beneficial to the climate and culture at our school.
May 2021 - ELA Centers
TDA (Text Dependent Analysis)
During this lesson, students worked in leveled groups to practice writing a TDA (Text Dependent Analysis), continue working on comprehension questions attached to short passages, continue free-writing using a choice board, and working on capitalization & punctuation examples for grammar practice.
