Field Experience

Through West Chester University, I have been placed in various grade levels ranging from Pre-K to 5th grade. I have learned how to differentiate for whole group lessons, as well as for individual students, through these different grade levels. The year-long experience has given me insight on the first day of school, back to school night, parent-teacher conferences, field trips, collaboration with other teachers, and school-wide activities, clubs and events.

New Garden Elementary School

3rd Grade (Student Teaching)

I am currently student teaching in Kennett Consolidated School District through the year-long program at West Chester University. This means that I am with the same classroom from the first day of school until the last day of school. I have already learned so much from this experience and continue to grow as a teacher. Some of the activities and events that I have been a part of include:
  • Setting up and decorating an empty classroom
  • Participating in Sneak-A-Peek & Back to School Night
  • Going to workshops relating to co-teaching, parent-teacher conferences, and technology
  • Communicating with parents through email, social media, Class Dojo, and parent-teacher conferences
  • Successfully creating and implementing a classroom management system (Class Dojo, tokens, motivation using PAT: Preferred Activity Time)
  • Collaborating with the other third grade teachers to create and implement lessons
  • Co-running two clubs: Math 24 Club and Jump Rope Club
  • Helping with Reading Olympics and assisting in the competition
  • Participating as a cheerleader at the New Garden vs. Bancroft basketball game
  • Participating in the school talent show

Pickering Valley Elementary School

5th Grade (Math Placement)

As a math minor, I am able to experience grade levels beyond my certification, including grades 5-8. My professor placed me in a fifth grade elementary placement to expose me to the upper elementary grade levels. I plan to get certified in mathematics grades 4-8 in addition to my BSED in elementary Pre K-4. I also plan to get certified in grades 5 and 6 to be able teach upper elementary level grades. Through this placement, I:
  • Fostered reasoning, problem solving, and cooperation by communicating with individual students through "math talks"
  • Created and implemented whole-class instruction through collaboration using co-teaching strategies

Westtown Children's Academy

Preschool Ages 3-5 (Chaddsford location)

Before this placement, I did not think I wanted to teach preschool, as I typically shine in the upper grade levels. However, this experience was one I will never forget. I was only there for one semester, but it was amazing to watch the children grow and I realized that I shine in the earlier grades as well! Seeing how I was able to successfully differentiate for other grade levels was eye-opening for me, and I now know that I can teach for any grade and enjoy it. Through this placement, I:
  • Managed and facilitated whole group instruction while focusing on learning through play using hands-on activities and various manipulatives
  • Developed creative, imaginative activities for preschool-age students with focuses in mathematics and literacy

East Goshen Elementary School

2nd Grade (First field placement)

This was my very first placement, which I was told to just observe and help out when needed. I decided that observing was not going to make me an amazing teacher. With the support of my cooperating teacher, I created a bulletin board, an activity to hang outside of the classroom, a whole group lesson, and I worked with students during writing workshop. My confidence grew throughout the semester, and I did not want to leave because I was having so much fun teaching! Through this placement, I:
  • Lead small-group instruction, differentiated during whole-group instruction, and worked with individual students during writing workshop
  • Supported the classroom teacher in various activities involving reading and writing
